400 Belgian castles, from the 400 castles described by Philippe Farcy since 2002
in his four books «100 Châteaux de Belgique, connus et méconnus» published by
Editions Aparté, and in his weekly Friday rubriques in daily Belgian La Libre
Belgique.
Philippe Farcy, born in 1957,
graduated in art history from Université Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV and completed
his studies at Ecole du Louvre. Journalist, he is today in charge of the art
market at Belgian daily La Libre Belgique.
The castles are recorded by provinces and separately for Brussels: a search tool
allows you to find easily the name of the castle, of the owners, of the town or
village (commune in French, gemeente in Dutch) before and after the merger of
these localities decided in 1975, following the French, Dutch, German or English
spelling wherever appropriate.
All the photos are owned by Philippe Farcy except those of Beirvelde in
Beervelde (count Renaud de Kerchove de Denterghem), Grand-Bigard in
Groot-Bijgaarden (Xavier Pelgrims de Bigard), Valduc in Hamme-Mille (anonymous),
La Cense du Seigneur in Mélin (Patricia Matthieu de Wynendaele), Viola Cornuta
in Uccle (David Lloyd Leisure), Chimay (prince de Chimay), château de Là-Bas in
Aische-en-Refail and Hodoumont in Jallet (Simon Schmidt www.globalview.be), the
Vieux-Joncs in Rijkhoven (Landcommanderij Alden Biesen), Waha (Me Parmentier).
Postcards are in the public domain. Owners of the photos not taken from the
books of Philippe Farcy are separately mentioned.
Other sources have been consulted, mentioned separately.
